Resisting Showing Up as a Personal Brand on Social? Here’s Why You Should Start

Amy Duncan of Team Duncan Financial had a website where they had images that were not engaging. In a highly competitive field such as financial advisors, we purposely showed Amy’s fun personality.

It’s possible that you’re not a very public person. Lots of people are on social media as “lurkers,” reading and sometimes responding to other people’s posts without posting much (if anything) themselves. For you as a private person, that’s a totally legitimate choice. But for you as a business, it’s a bit problematic.

Freedom is a key value that many of Amy’s clients have. It is always a great idea to showcase what separates you from the competition. This image as the banner will help attract Team Duncan’s ideal clients.

Hiding behind your company or product and posting as your business on social media can certainly mean you can easily maintain some degree of privacy and separation between yourself and the public. It means you can be a bit of a “wizard behind the curtain,” fully in control yet free from scrutiny, criticism–and in some cases–accountability.

In the world of social media marketing, there’s a demand for greater business transparency. Most businesses (especially service businesses like coaching or consulting) are expected to have a personal brand presence, showcasing, at least on a basic level, the primary representative and responsible party for the company (which, if you’re an entrepreneur, is you).

Including a picture taken with your pet is another great way to engage with your audience. Did you know it can increase engagement by more than 60%? Make sure you talk about your pet and why you love them!

Here’s why.

People care.

Your potential customers and potential clients care about who they’re doing business with. A recent article on Sprout Social shared that a whopping 86% of Americans believe transparency from businesses is more important than ever.

The good news is, even if you’re a more private person and don’t want to share a bunch of personal stuff with total strangers on social media, you can still show up authentically as yourself by incorporating your business values and mission into your posts. If you want to share more about how that influences you in your life or let your audience see inside even a small part of your life, that’s a bonus.

Make sure you show yourself working to give people a sense of what you do and that you love what you’re doing.

What I love so much about personally branded photographs for your business is how easy they make sharing who you are and what’s important to you. You can do it with photos without having to discuss specifics.

The bottom line is that people do business with people, not products or services. They want to know who they’re buying from.

I’d love to help you show up as YOU, so making a purchasing decision is easier for your ideal clients. Click here to get on my calendar, and let’s discuss how I can support you.
