Horses of Estes Park

We got to go Horseback Riding in the Rocky Mountain National Park twice so we could share our experiences with the camp guests.

Jeff and I went horseback riding in Rocky Mountain National Park. In May it was Jeff's first time riding in his life! What a milestone day! But he did great and looked like a natural and even said he would do it again (which he did the following month). Maybe there’s a horse farm in our future…😆

It was amazing to ride horses in the Rocky Mountain National Park with Jeff

Bright, Open Trail

Horses are really special to me since I had one for 16 years. We rode for two hours and it was beautiful with the snow-capped mountains around us and brilliant skies with bright clouds. We even had elk on our trail and I got some photos of them. Jeff rode Macho and I rode Twister. Both were good horses.

Jeff Gets Back in the Saddle

In mid-June, we took the horses out again. We did a 2-hour ride and this time our beautiful horses were Abe (Lincoln) and Bozo the Buckskin. It was a steep ride straight up and down the mountain. If you can do it, I think one of the best ways to take in natural surroundings is on horseback. You have nature all around you, plus a natural being is helping you explore it.

Later that evening we had a nice fireside chat with a young couple who has been RV full-timing for 5 years. We got lots of great advice about things like workamping and what to look for in future opportunities. Kelly and Charlie work for a low wage and get to camp at locations for free. They worked on the maintenance team and made sure our campground looked amazing for the season and even created new tent sites.

This palomino and buckskin were really sweet on each other.

A Field of Horses

In August, I came across horses in a field. Emboldened by a recent moose sighting, we set out to capture baby elk. They usually hung out by the Estes Park golf course but none were to be seen.

Then we saw some horses by the fence, so I took out my Canon 600 mm lens f/11 and my love of horses began capturing their sweet interactions.

The palomino was a mare and she was trying to get the attention of the buckskin who was a gelding. He was trying hard to perform but it wasn't working out so well.

The funny thing is that she was in the pasture with some other geldings but she wasn't interested in them. The palomino had eyes only for the buckskin. I must say she had really good taste.

I’m glad I captured these sweet moments and I’ll find Elk another time.

Horse books I read this summer!
