Zebras of the 2023 Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico

I love the Zebra fashion! Kim Brundage Photography

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is one of the world's most unique and exciting events. It is the biggest Hot Air Balloon event in the world.

Thousands of people gather in New Mexico every year to watch hundreds of hot air balloons take to the skies. And while the balloons themselves are certainly a sight to behold, there is another group of individuals who are just as crucial to the success of the event: the Zebras.

So, who exactly are the Zebras? Well, they are the launch directors of the Balloon Fiesta. These individuals are responsible for helping launch the balloons each morning, ensuring the process goes smoothly and safely. They are called Zebras because they wear black and white striped shirts, which help them stand out in crowds.

But being a Zebra is not just about wearing a cool shirt. It is a serious job that requires a lot of skill and training. In fact, the training process for becoming a launch director has become much more involved in recent years. It now includes a three-year probationary period, during which potential directors must shadow experienced Zebras and learn the ins and outs of launching balloons.

I spoke with many of the Zebras. They were all very kind and engaging. They take their volunteer job seriously, which is Safety First. On Mass Ascension mornings, around 500 Balloons took off on a field the size of 52 football fields, and they all launched safely.

There is a story to be told as many fly in to volunteer and dedicate 10+ days, arriving before dawn to launch the Dawn Patrol safely. Dawn Patrol is when 5-10 balloons launch in the dark before dawn to see which way the winds are blowing.

A cool story I learned was one Zebra, Dezi, flew in from Hawaii and is a master scuba dive instructor. Another Rachael is a retired military personnel and is from West Virginia. I bet there are loads of cool stories to share about these amazing volunteers.

Attending the Balloon Fiesta is a bucket list for many people, and people travel from all over the world — some Zebras hand out cards and pins. I was lucky to get two pins.

Zebras get to see the joy and awe on people’s faces as the sky fills with beautiful colors and shapes.

But being a zebra is not just about the joy of seeing people experience the Balloon Fiesta. It is also a serious responsibility. Launch directors must be able to communicate effectively with balloon pilots, other zebras, and the crowds of people who gather to watch the launch. They must also be able to make quick decisions in the event of an emergency.

Despite the challenges, being a zebra is a rewarding experience. It is a chance to be a part of something truly special and to help make the Balloon Fiesta a success. And for those who are interested in becoming a zebra, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. The Balloon Fiesta is always looking for dedicated individuals who are willing to learn and grow as launch directors.

The Zebras of the Balloon Fiesta are essential to the event's success. They are skilled and dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to ensure that the launch of hundreds of hot air balloons goes smoothly and safely. And while their job may not be as glamorous as piloting a balloon, it is just as important.

The next time you attend the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, be sure to take a moment to thank the Zebras for all that they do.
