Capturing Confidence: Embracing Body Positivity through Branding Photography

I used flowers around my lens to soften the sharp edges in the landscape. Tracey celebrates her 50th birthday milestone after her branding session as a State Farm Agent.

In a world saturated with image-centric platforms and a relentless pursuit of perfection, it's easy for individuals to feel overwhelmed by societal standards of beauty.

However, as a branding photographer, I believe that true beauty lies in authenticity and confidence. I’ve found that embracing one's unique self can result in compelling and authentic brand visuals.

Here are the top 3 ways I help my branding photography clients show up in the most confident and unique way:

#1: The Power of Self-Love in Branding

Body confidence is not just a personal journey; it's also a crucial element in building a brand that resonates with authenticity. In an era where consumers are increasingly drawn to transparent and relatable brands, showcasing genuine confidence in your personal and professional images can be a game-changer, especially for women entrepreneurs.

#2: Celebrate Diversity

As a branding photographer, I know it's essential to recognize and celebrate the diversity of body shapes, sizes, and appearances. Every individual has a unique story, and capturing that diversity in your brand visuals creates a narrative that is inclusive and relatable.

#3: Authenticity Sells

Clients are drawn to authenticity. When individuals exude confidence and self-love in their branding photos, it sends a powerful message that they are comfortable in their own skin. This authenticity can attract a like-minded audience who values realness over the curated façade often seen in mainstream media.

As a skilled branding photographer, I’ve honed my ability to empower my clients by creating an environment where they feel comfortable and confident. By highlighting their strengths and uniqueness, our photo sessions become more than just a chance to capture new branded business images. They contribute to building their self-esteem, which is reflected in the visual content produced.

I take my own portraits to remind myself of my own unique beauty. It builds my body confidence and positivity.

Here are my top 3 techniques for cultivating body confidence before and during my branding photo shoots:

#1: Pre-Shoot Consultation

Before a branding photoshoot, it’s imperative that I engage in open communication with my clients. Understanding their journey helps me tailor the photoshoot to capture their essence authentically. I encourage them to identify their insecurities, aspirations, and what makes them feel empowered, and then we discuss how to communicate that visually.

I also give them the assignment of deciding on 3-5 words that will guide how they want to come across in their images. Words like “ fun, approachable, confident, intelligent, studious, academic, strong, and happy” give not only me but my hair, makeup, and styling team a clear vision for their photoshoot.

#2: Create a Positive Environment

In order for my clients to feel comfortable expressing themselves, it’s essential that I create a positive and supportive atmosphere during their photoshoots. I’ve found that a comfortable and uplifting environment results in more natural and confident expressions, so my team and I foster this from the moment a client steps into our space, through the hair and makeup phase, and as they step into the studio to have their photos taken.

#3: Posing Techniques

During my clients’ photoshoots, I employ posing techniques that enhance their natural features and play to their strengths. I use angles, lighting, and poses that highlight the unique beauty of each of my clients.

As a branding photographer, I have the incredible opportunity to influence how individuals perceive themselves and how they present their authentic selves to the world. It’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly and one of the things I love most about what I do.

By encouraging body confidence for my clients, I contribute to a culture of acceptance and self-love, ultimately creating visuals that resonate with the hearts of their audiences. I have a passion for this message, especially for young women. Click here to watch a talk I did for the GRIT (Girls Rock in Technology) a few years ago, reminding them that they are beautiful.
